5, Practical Task: Analyzing Ethical Scenarios in AI

Overview

This activity guides educators through examining real or hypothetical scenarios involving AI applications in educational settings. It encourages critical thinking on potential ethical risks associated with AI, such as privacy concerns, biases in algorithms, and implications for equity. Educators will work on identifying these risks and then propose practical solutions to address them, enhancing transparency, fairness, and respect for students’ rights.

Activity

Objective: Identify potential ethical risks in various AI scenarios relevant to education, such as:

  • Data Privacy: Assess the privacy implications of AI systems that collect and analyze student data. Educators should determine if consent protocols are in place and if data usage aligns with regulatory standards like GDPR.
  • Algorithmic Bias: Recognize any biases within AI tools that may favor or disadvantage specific student groups. For example, an AI tool designed to evaluate writing skills might underperform when applied to non-native speakers if it was trained on data predominantly from native English speakers.

Educators will then propose solutions that promote responsible AI use, such as:

  • Implementing privacy safeguards, like data anonymization, and regularly updating consent agreements.
  • Working with AI providers to improve data representation and reduce cultural biases.

After discussing each scenario, educators will summarize how these steps align with ethical and regulatory standards and ensure fair and transparent AI use.

Learning Outcome

By completing this task, educators will learn to:

  • Analyze and assess the ethical challenges presented by AI in education.
  • Apply ethical principles and knowledge of regulations to make informed decisions that enhance student protection and trust in AI tools.

This task strengthens educators’ ability to thoughtfully integrate AI into classrooms while safeguarding ethical considerations.
